Creating a functional site goes far beyond its aesthetics and features. Creating and maintaining browser compliance is a huge task that needs not to be overlooked. In this time of transition between modernizing websites while still making them useful with ancient hardware, we need to be especially careful we do not leave a group out of the equation. As browsers continually build new features into their software that allow web developers to build feature-heavy sites with relative ease, some forget about the demographic that still uses Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8 and even older versions of Firefox. These browsers still need to be able to display your content in a readable fashion especially those sites that utilize eCommerce systems. As a merchant you do not want to isolate the ancient-browser users because you will decrease your demographic significantly. Most large corporations are still using old machines that will not display the fancy features being utilized in today’s browsers. For this reason it is always important to make sure your CSS degrades nicely, so that all browsers can display your content and ultimately deliver a better user experience for everyone using your site. As technology improves we will be able to completely write-off old browsers as not useful anymore, but until that day comes, make sure your site is being seen by the largest demographic possible.
